Installation and Commissioning Determine Future Reliability; Placing the Equipment Is Not Enough

A generator that starts on arrival does not mean the project already has reliable standby power. Commissioning must verify the foundation, vibration isolation, ventilation, exhaust, fuel, cables, grounding, ATS, low-voltage distribution and recovery of critical loads. Any omission can later cause overheating, trips, starting failures or partial outages.

Key Engineering Point Acceptance should close the loop across environmental conditions, generator status, transfer operation, distribution circuits, load recovery and operating records. A single no-load test should not be the handover criterion.

Probable Causes

Many After-Sales Failures Begin During Installation

In a commercial project, the equipment room, load structure and distribution path are more complex than stand-alone generator operation. Excessive exhaust backpressure, insufficient airflow, poor grounding, badly crimped terminals or untested ATS logic often appear only during a real outage or high-load operation.

Site Conditions Affect Operating Stability

Insufficient airflow, restricted exhaust or inadequate heat-clearance distances may appear acceptable during a short test but cause derating or protective shutdown during extended loaded operation.

Electrical Connections Determine the Transfer Result

If cable sizing, grounding, phase sequence, protection settings and ATS wiring are not verified, the generator may start without supplying the critical circuits.

Skipping the Retest Leaves Hidden Risks

Without correction records and retest data, maintenance teams cannot tell which risks were closed and which still require follow-up.

Commissioning Process

Commissioning Should Be Divided into Verifiable Engineering Items

  1. 01

    First verify the foundation, lifting arrangement, vibration isolation, maintenance access, air inlet and outlet, exhaust route and fuel piping.

  2. 02

    Check cable sizing and terminations, grounding, phase sequence, control wiring, ATS logic and low-voltage protection settings.

  3. 03

    Perform starting, no-load, loaded, simulated utility-failure, ATS-transfer and critical-load-recovery tests, recording the key parameters.

  4. 04

    Create a corrective-action list and repeat the same test procedure after corrections. Verbal confirmation does not replace an acceptance record.

When an On-Site Inspection Is Required

These Conditions Require On-Site Inspection, Not Remote Review Alone

  • Commissioning reveals high temperature, abnormal vibration, exhaust recirculation, fuel leakage or repeated controller alarms.
  • The ATS fails to transfer, phase sequence is incorrect, a switchboard trips, a phase is missing or critical loads do not recover.
  • The equipment room differs materially from the design and ventilation, exhaust, maintenance access and safety clearances must be reassessed.

Prevention and Operations

To Find Problems Before an Outage, Every Inspection Must Be Recorded

Preventive Checks

  • Before installation, confirm foundation dimensions, exhaust backpressure, ventilation area, fuel piping and cable routes on the drawings.
  • During commissioning, accept the generator, ATS, low-voltage distribution and critical loads as one system.
  • Retain settings, test data, correction photographs and retest results in the handover package.

Operations and Maintenance Routine

  • During the first weeks of operation, monitor temperature rise, exhaust, fuel, loose terminals, alarms and load variation.
  • After each maintenance visit, perform a short starting or transfer check to detect new connection or parameter issues.
  • After adding loads, renovation or distribution changes, recheck generator capacity and transfer logic.

Engineering Recommendation

Commissioning is not the end of handover; it is the starting point for years of reliable operation. Resolving and documenting installation issues prevents after-sales service from repeatedly correcting unfinished work.
