The Generator Must Take Over Hospital IT Before the UPS Ride-Through Window Ends

Site Issue: Servers Have UPS Support, but Hospital Workflows Can Still Stop

Hospital IT teams often say: “The servers and network have UPS support, so they should last until the generator starts.” During a real outage, however, HIS or PACS can still disrupt clinical workflows if server-room cooling, core switches, billing terminals, image viewing and access control are outside the backup chain—even when the servers themselves remain powered.

Another common problem is actual UPS runtime falling below the recorded value. Battery aging, increased load, server-room cooling outside UPS coverage and excessive ATS transfer time all reduce the available generator handoff window.

Why This Design: Prevent the “Servers Stayed On, but the Workflow Stopped” Failure

A hospital information system is a set of operational links, not one server. Generator capacity must cover core IT, server-room cooling, network equipment and essential terminals; the ATS must reliably transfer critical room circuits; the UPS must bridge generator start, stabilization and transfer; and remote inspection must record generator status, alarms, operating hours and ATS state.

If the hospital has branch facilities, floor telecom rooms or telemedicine, network links and floor-level systems must also enter the load-priority plan. Engineering typically places the core server room in the immediate-support tier, restores floor networks and billing terminals in sequence, and delays normal office terminals and noncritical displays.
