Site Issue: Not Every Elevator Must Run During an Outage, but the Required Units Must Be Defined
For shopping centers, high-rise commercial buildings and underground parking, the outage objective is rarely to keep every elevator operating normally. It is to maintain evacuation, keep selected service or fire-service elevators available, and restore basic access to parking and critical floors.
Without predefined elevator priorities, several units may start together after generator transfer, causing excessive demand, frequency dip or breaker trips that can disrupt life-safety and telecom systems.
Configuration Review: Evacuation, Elevator Types and Starting Methods
Confirm priorities for passenger, service and fire-service elevators, escalators and parking access. Review power, starting methods, controllers and low-voltage circuits before deciding whether delayed loading is required.
- Elevator and escalator count, power, control method and served floors.
- Evacuation elevators, fire-service elevators or parking-access equipment that must be backed up.
- Photos of elevator controllers, distribution panels, ATS equipment and associated breakers.
- Whether all units, selected units or evacuation-only operation is required during an outage.
Why This Design: Elevator Loads Must Be Managed by Recovery Sequence
Elevators impose starting demand, while escalators, ventilation and lighting may recover in the same public zones. The design must state the emergency elevator operating strategy instead of simply adding every nameplate rating.
Prioritize elevators required for safe evacuation, with parking payment and route lighting as supporting loads. Normal escalators and noncritical passenger elevators can recover later. Control logic or operating procedures should prevent simultaneous starts when necessary.
