Keep POS Online by Backing Up the Payment Network and Low-Voltage Systems Together

A mall outage often disrupts POS terminals, networks and payment systems before other operations. Sizing must account for tenant checkout loads, the telecom room, UPS runtime and the generator takeover window—not simply the number of stores.

Site Issue: The Generator Starts, but Tenants Still Cannot Process Payments

Property teams often say: “We have a standby generator and the common areas stay lit, yet some tenant POS terminals still drop offline and the payment network takes too long to recover.” The issue may not be generator capacity. The telecom room, network switches, checkout circuits and UPS ride-through window may never have been reviewed as one chain.

The transaction chain typically includes tenant POS terminals, the mall network, checkout servers, payment devices, loyalty systems, parking payment and customer-service desks. Backing up only lighting and air conditioning does not preserve real business continuity.

Identify which tenants must keep trading during an outage, whether the POS network is concentrated in a telecom room, how long the UPS can support it, and whether network equipment and checkout circuits return together after ATS transfer.

  • Tenant count, critical tenant types, POS locations and peak trading periods.
  • Loads for telecom rooms, switches, routers, checkout servers and payment gateways.
  • UPS capacity, runtime, battery condition and latest maintenance records.
  • Whether POS, network and common-area lighting are on separate distribution circuits.

Why This Design: Transaction Systems and Life-Safety Loads Require Separate Priorities

An individual POS load is small, but the system is highly sensitive to recovery order. If the network core, payment path and tenant checkout circuits do not share the same priority after generator start, the lights may return while payments remain unavailable. The design must coordinate the low-voltage UPS, ATS transfer, distribution zoning and network recovery sequence.

For large mixed-use malls, prioritize the core telecom systems, selected tenant checkout circuits, customer-service desks, parking payment and limited common-area lighting, or restore them by zone. Comfort cooling, decorative lighting and standard tenant circuits can be delayed to limit the initial load step when the generator takes over.
