Site Issue: Cold-Chain Loads Are Small, but Outage Losses Are Difficult to Recover

Hospital pharmacies and laboratories often ask: “The cold-room load is small, so why review it separately?” Because the consequence is not simply equipment downtime; a temperature excursion can invalidate medicines, vaccines, blood or samples. During an extended outage, losses may far exceed equipment value if fuel runtime, temperature alarms and refueling plans are unclear.

Cold-chain loads are also distributed. Pharmacy cold rooms, vaccine refrigerators, blood banks, sample refrigerators and laboratory refrigeration may sit on different floors and circuits. Teams may believe “all cold chain is generator-backed,” yet site review often finds only partial circuit coverage or temperature alarms excluded from the duty-response process.

Define target temperature, allowable variation, maximum acceptable outage and recording requirements. Then review refrigeration power, starting method, compressor staging, circuit independence and whether pharmacy lighting, access control, network and alarms must remain powered after generator transfer.

Why This Design: Cold-Chain Power Must Be Linked to Operating Procedures

Cold chain is more than “connecting it to the generator.” A reliable design prioritizes cold-chain circuits, stages or delays refrigeration startup, sizes fuel storage for target runtime and integrates fuel-level and temperature alarms into duty procedures. Generator controller, ATS, fuel level, operating hours and alarm records must be available for periodic remote or on-site inspection.

Where extended outages are common, a day tank may be insufficient and bulk storage or a refueling procedure may be required. Confirm tanker access, interference with emergency routes, nighttime refueling permission, spill risk and safety-isolation requirements in advance. These determine actual runtime—not the generator nameplate.
