Site Issue: Not Every Laboratory Can Restart Immediately After an Outage
Schools ask: “Which equipment must remain powered? What cannot restart immediately? Should fume hoods and sample refrigerators be included?” The challenge is not the largest total load, but the different risk profile of each laboratory.
Teaching labs, research labs, sample-storage rooms and hazardous-chemical areas have very different outage tolerances. They must be classified by risk rather than summed as one laboratory building load.
Configuration Review: Laboratory Risk Classes and Equipment Restart Rules
Confirm laboratory type, instrument sensitivity, sample value, ventilation requirements and safety systems. Then define which equipment uses UPS support, generator supply or manual authorization before restart.
- Number and purpose of laboratories, equipment inventory and critical-instrument nameplates.
- Sample refrigerators, freezers, cold rooms, incubators and temperature-recording requirements.
- Fume hoods, exhaust, gas detection, safety interlocks and fire-protection systems.
- Protective shutdown rules, restart authority, authorized operators and duty procedures.
Why This Design: Allocate Laboratory Backup by Risk, Not Evenly by Floor
Sample preservation and safety ventilation usually take priority, while routine teaching equipment can restart later. Precision instruments require review for direct generator supply, UPS support, power conditioning or delayed connection.
Document cold-chain runtime, ventilation safety, ATS transfer, low-voltage circuit labels and restart authority. Handover training should explicitly identify equipment that facilities staff must not restart without approval.

- Laboratory buildings, room counts, uses and critical-equipment inventory.
- Information on sample refrigeration, fume hoods, exhaust, safety interlocks and alarm systems.
- Equipment nameplates, starting methods, UPS information and restart procedures.
- Existing generator, ATS, switchboards, laboratory circuits and single-line diagrams.
- Maintenance team, laboratory owners, training audience and pre-term inspection needs.
